About This Item

New York: Macmillan, 1911. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Near fine. A Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing showing some minor sunning to the spines (otherwise Fine) in the RARE ORIGINAL SLIPCASE with the label to the top edge. [The slipcase shows general wear and some modest splitting. Each Volume's front pastedown hosts the bookplate of Wm. R. Anderson as well as a small date stamp reading "Jan 2 - 1915". The recto of Volume I's front free endpaper shows a stamp reading " For reviews of this book see: YALE REVIEW" followed by a neatly written "II - 363 - Chauncey B. Tinker".] John Ruskin (1819-1900), an absolutely brilliant man, was one of England's Greats, being a Victorian Era author, lecturer, philosopher, art critic and polymath who wrote on numerous subjects, including geology, art, architecture, myth, ornithology, literature, education, botany, and political economy. He produced works of Art and wrote in many forms, including essays, treatises, poetry, lectures, travel guides and manuals, personal letters and at least one published fairy tale ["The King of the Golden River or The Black Brothers: A Legend of Stiria", a 1841 fantasy tale that he wrote for his then-future wife (who later had their unconsummated marriage annulled and then married John Everett Millais]. This set is rather uncommon to the market and copies in the ORIGINAL SLIPCASE ARE EXTRAORDINARILY SCARCE TO RARE.
