About This Item

Porin Taidemuseo, 2011. Paperback. Very Good/No dust jacket. Very good condition; shows minimal wear with pages clean and tight in binding. Background: Artist Jan-Erik Andersson's total work of art that crosses borders, the leaf-shaped detached house Life on a Leaf, was completed in Turku in August 2009 after a ten-year process. The unique house, which serves as the residence of the Andersson family, was designed together with architect Erkki Pitkäranta.Jan-Erik Andersson strongly believes that research into a sustainable future from a visual and design point of view must be done on several levels. In the Life on a Leaf project, Andersson and Pitkäranta map the ecological dimensions of sleep, imagination, iconic space and "slow living" - ideas that have their roots in the Arts and Crafts movement. In addition to sources such as Kurt Schwitters, Le Corbusier, Antoni Gaud, Bruce Goff, Konstantin Melnikov, Hundertwasser, Archigram and Rem Koolhaas, Andersson is also inspired by Swedish children's author Elsa Beskow, whose stories include houses shaped like hats and umbrellas. One of the recurring themes of Andersson's 30-year career as an artist is to explore and question the boundaries between the colorful and iconic aesthetics that adults construct for children and the dark seriousness often associated with adult visual culture. The Life on a Leaf house has inspired a dozen of Jan-Erik Andersson's artist colleagues to create artworks and poems that have been incorporated into the building - wall and floor details, kitchen laminate countertops, wallpaper, lighting, in-floor video work, courtyard tables and benches, environmental design and railing sound - an installation that reacts to changes in wind and light outside. The house is not a closed private home - it is a place where different ideas and aesthetic views can meet and cooperate.
