London: Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1821. First edition, Third Issue. Full Leather. Near Fine. 23.5 x 15 cm. Octavo. xvi 376p, [8 ads]. Handsomely bound into full red leather with gilt devices of dominos, a boxing match, and a pair of dancers to the spine. 4 raised leather bands to spine. TEG. Beautifully illustrated with 36 hand-colored aquatint plates by Isaac Robert and George Cruikshank as well as in-text woodcuts. 3 double sided fold-outs of musical notes between pages 118-119. Tooley's first edition, third issue with 1821 on title page, footnote on page 9, the first musical score numbered 1 and 2, and "good-bies" on page 376. Bookplate on second front endpaper. Spine has been professionally rebacked. Tiny closed tear to top of frontispiece. Lacking half-title. Plates without foxing. Lovely copy in a fine binding. An enormously popular work of the high and low life in London, it was translated into French and reprinted many times throughout the 19th century. References: Abbey Life 281. Cohn 262. Tooley 196.
