Chicago: Manz Engraving Company, 1955. No date; circa 1955. Fine facsimile of 1904 Congressional Issue reproduced from the original volume by photographic process and published by Manz Engraving Company of Chicago. Produced for Jefferson's Monticello estate museum, this is a facsimile of the first lithographic edition published in 1904 by the Governmment Printing Office after an act of the United States Congress. Maroon leather-like (or possibly leather) textured boards, gilt spine titles w/several bands, light shelf wear. Heavy stock, smooth coated pages fine; no writing. Green marbled endpapers similar to original in hues of green and white. Monticello label at front endpaper w/water color image of Jefferson's home in classical monochromatic navy: "Monticello. This Article Purchased from the Monticello Gift Shop. Charlottesville, Virginia." String bind, fine; hinges intact. Fine, heavy, book craftsmanship as the original. From "Material Extracted Textually from the Gospels in Greek, Latin, French, and English." Presents a complete facsimile reproduction of Jefferson's Bible in which is underscored the passages from the Gospels directly related to words and actions of Jesus. This is, in regards, Jefferson's attempt to remove supernatural aspects of Bible to further clarify Jesus' doctrine. "Thomas Jefferson's mission was leadership. Without an effort on his part, expressions from his lips, that from other men's would scarcely have attracted notice, became thenceforth axioms, creeds, and gathering-cries to great masses of his countrymen." - Henry S.
