London: Bickers and Son, 1887. Later edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. [9], xii-xiv, [3], 2-351, [3] pp. Contemporary smooth green calf with two gilt rules to each board, the spine in six compartments with gilt decorations and a red morocco label lettered in gilt on the spine; all edges marbled. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Bound by the publisher. Illustrated with a frontispiece of Nelson and with thirteen plates, one a fold-out, one a facsimile of Nelson's handwriting, and the rest mounted. Given as a prize in Midsummer 1889 to Mr. C.J. Phipps, at Langley Place, as told by an inscription on the verso of the front flyleaf. An attractive edition of Southey's biography of the English war hero and commander. Traces of rubbing, particularly to the rear board; very occasional, unobstrusive foxing.
