About This Item
New York: G. P. Putnam, 1906. First Edition, First Printing. A Very Good Hardcover. Near Fine/No Dust Jacket.
Original deep green cloth binding, with a striking gilt-decorated pictorial binding designed by the Decorative Designers studio featuring riders on horseback, leaping hounds, deer, sea lions, and swimming fish.
Tall octavo, 9.75 inches tall: 401 p. with a frontispiece and 92 halftone relief illustrations from photographs. The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear with rugging on the edges.. Charles Holder was a pioneer of big game fishing, and founded the first game fishing organization, the Tuna Club of Avalon. Here he recorded the most diverse account in his time in the turn-of-the-century the remote wild regions of Southern California; includes lively anecdotes of hunting lynx in the Arroyo Seco, and fox with the Valley Hunt Club, as well as coaching on the mountain road at Catalina Island, and trolling for tuna among the Channel Islands.
Holder was an early advocate of the notion of using lighter tackle on large fish. From the pursuit of the "devil rays" off the Carolina coast to sharks, swordfish, and tuna in the Pacific, Holder's stories are full of adventure, excitement, and expertise.
