Published in 1865 by Derby and Miller Publishers in New York. 6.5'' x 9.5'', 808 pages (with some unnumbered advertisements in the rear). With black-and-white illustrations throughout. The book is in good minus condition. The boards and spine are scuffed, toned and faded, including the gilt lettering on the spine. Shelf wear to the spine, including some cloth loss, and bumping and scuffing to the corners. Foxing to the endpapers and pastedowns, and a moisture stain in the corner of the rear pastedown. The original tissue paper is there, with the image on Lincoln having imprinted on it and through to the title page. Foxing to the bottom edge and moisture stains on the top edge. Some foxing and toning to the text block, along with imprinting caused by leaves pressed between pages. Otherwise, the text block and illustrations are bright and unmarked. The binding is sound. The author, Henry Jarvis Raymond, is most notable as the co-founder of the New York Times. He was also a founding member of the Republican Party, a political ally and admirer of Lincoln, the Lieutenant Governor of New York, the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Speaker of the New York State Assembly, and a Member of Congress from the 6th New York District. His long career in journalism and politics will undoubtedly make this book a worthy collectible for the student of American history.
