About This Item
Washington, D.C.: no publisher, 1871. First Edition. “For Circulation in Japan.” Illustrated with albumen photographs (some of prints) and a frontispiece engraving of Grant provided by the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. Original cloth; top and bottom of spine chipped; front hinge weak; a clean copy of a rare book, probably printed in a very small number. The author was the first Japanese ambassador to the United States, serving from 1871-1873. A Christian who subsequently served in various other government posts, including as ambassador to Great Britain, Mori advocated the adoption of English as Japan’s official language, reforms in education, as well as expanded rights for women. His radical ideas and Western views led to his assassination by ultra-nationalists in 1889.
