About This Item
London: Everett & Co, 1906. 1st ed. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 vols. frontis, photos and illustrations, index, xxix, [2], 32-291, x, [2], [14]-291p. Original red cloth. 23cm. Both backstrips are faded; the backstrip on Vol. II is also rather spotted. Ends of backstrips rubbed. Minor foxing. Five adjacent illustrations stick out a little and appear to have been reglued without completely reseating them. Cover edges slightly soiled. No Jackets. Penzer [and others] have attacked this biography, especially Wright's statement that Burton took three-fourth's of his Arabian Nights from John Payne's version. [See pp. 312-322 in Penzer's An Annotated Bibliography of Sir Richard Francis Burton].
