About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1916. Later printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good +. 404pp. Octavo [19.5cm]. Bound in terracotta brown cloth, with gilt stamped titles on spine and front board. Additionally, charming blind stamped dragonfly design on front board. Top edge gilt. Spine ends lightly bumped, and spine a touch rolled. Textblock edges foxed. Mild abrasian and remnants of an ex-libris sticker on front free endpaper. In a dust jacket with a few small chips and very subtle soiling. French naturalist and entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre was known for the lively, engaging and poetic way he wrote about the lives of insects. Fabre's method of infusing insect life with humanity and humor still influences contemporary natural history writing.

Synopsis

The Spider has a bad name: to most of us, she represents an odious, noxious animal, which every one hastens to crush under foot. Against this summary verdict the observer sets the beast's industry, its talent as a weaver, its wiliness in the chase, its tragic nuptials and other characteristics of great interest. Yes, the Spider is well worth studying, apart from any scientific reasons; but she is said to be poisonous and that is her crime and the primary cause of the repugnance wherewith she inspires us.
