About This Item

New York: G. & C. & H. Carvill, 1829. First Edition. Full leather. Good. 12mo. Pp. 4-311, 12 of publisher's advertising dated June 1, 1829 listing this and the full 3-volume 8vo. edition. Publisher's full calf, titles in gilt on dark red morocco label. Corners bumped, spine head minimally chipped, foxing and dampstains scattered throughout, front hinge starting, title page with archival repair to closed tear, remnants of labels on pastedowns, ink marks to front pastedown, center leaf of gathering 12 loosened. In the "Advertisement" dated Seville, December 1828 Irving explains his rationale for offering this abridgment as his original intention hastened by reports of others in preparation, and his hope it would help establish it as the work for which he would be best remembered.

The full History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus of 1828 was his most "painstaking effort" and his greatest work as an amateur historian. He wrote that he intended it "to relate to the deeds and fortunes of the mariner, who first had the judgment to divine, and the intrepidity to brave the mysteries of the perilous deep." The completed work presented for the first time in English the result of Irving's extensive research while in Spain. It earned him election to the Spanish Royal Academy of History and anticipated the wave of American and British interest in Iberian history and folklore (DAB).

In this shortened version, the very first of numerous editions and revisions, he has given a "satisfactory abstract of everything of essential importance in the larger work, and preserved those parts nearly entire which have been considered the most striking and characteristic."

BAL, 10127; Sabin, 35182; see Langfeld, p. 27.
