Freeport, Maine:: Rebecca Goodale,, 2022.. One-of-a-Kind. 20" in diameter circle book with cotton braids. Ink on handmade paper. Wall hung. Signed by the artist. Rebecca Goodale: "Lilith was created from the same clay as Adam. She understood herself to be his equal and when she refused to be subservient, she was banished from Eden and restricted to haunting the night. In Isaiah she is referred to as the night-demon accompanied by the wildcat and hyena (or possibly a jackal). I looked at images of sixth century incantation bowls that depicted Lilith. The imagery on those bowls was extraordinary and I decided to create a set of circle books about Lilith in the dark. If someone was limited to a life of darkness, then why wouldn't they consider any of these options- astronomer, poet, mermaid, housecleaner, or night-demon?" Goodale was invited to participate in an exhibition at the Maine Jewish Museum about Women's Stories from the Bible. The Lilith books were created for this event. Maine Jewish Museum, "Women's Stories from the Bible": "Stories we tell each other are all we have. There would be no past without stories of kings and wars and love and ancestors. There would be no future without stories of hope and aspiration and lessons learned. "Saint, whore, mother, daughter, queen, slave, hero, betrayer, betrayed. The stories of women are abundant in the Bible. The work in Stories looks at these tales with 21st century eyes and retells them in contemporary book art form. Ancient stories can tell contemporary truths.

Signed and numbered by the artist. Jan Owen: "In 2020, the New York Times decided to capitalize Black as they did in1930 for the designation, Negro. But Black and White is hardly a description of the many shades of skin tones so I made shades of pinks and browns, ochre, and red to make the faces. "The words in 'Black White' are about racism said by writers, preachers, Congress. I dont think theres one way, there are many ways that we can learn to give up our prejudices. AB Gorham: "'Unidentified Found Object Song' is an artist book that draws on published documentation of unidentified flying objects (ufos) and other alien phenomenon to create a mysterious visual/reading encounter. This book exists on the edge of visual and textual logic, taking recognizable objects and elements of landscape and defamiliarizing them through digital manipulation, unexpected color combinations, and isolation from context. Each spread contains a vaguely-familiar visual mystery letterpress printed in colors from saturated reds and golds to transparent violets. There is sidewalk cheese, lenticular clouds, and a landscape of crumbs.…

Portland, Maine:: Rebecca Goodale,, 2001.. Edition of 10. 9.625 x 9.5 x .75"; 4 leaves. Silkscreen printed accordion onto which are tipped handcut inkjet-printed butterflies. Clothbound portfolio case closed with an elastic band. Linda J. Docherty, Catalog of the Exhibition: Threatened and Endangered: Artists' Books Created by Rebecca Goodale, 2004: "Four Maine Butterflies illuminates the fragile beauty of the natural world. It invites contemplations of differences among insects that appear, at first glance, similar. Goodale shows the intricate silhouettes and subtle markings that distinguish Edwards' hairstrea, Clayton's copper, hessel's hairstreak, and Katahdin Arctic. The butterfly forms are cut out and placed on decorative backgrounds inspired by their individual host plants. In the history of art, the butterfly symbolizes resurrection, and Goodale captures this hopeful quality. The insects pop up and hover over the pages, vibrating with life despite their endangered status.

Housed in hinged wooden box with Latex glove, flower seeds, and plastic horse. Scott McCarney,: " This book documents a version of a piece that has been installed/performed privately in my garden in Rochester NY for the past eight years. It started as a tribute to my father, who died at his home in Virginia from lung cancer in 2001. When told he had three weeks to six month to live, he chose to move from hospital to hospice care at home. That was Friday. We had a nice weekend together before he passed away the following Tuesday, much to the surprise of his doctor. Being with him those last few days, I understood his will to die was as strong as his will to live had been.
