New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1917. First American Edition. First Printing, with "Published August 1917" on copyright page, and no mention of further printings. Octavo (19.75cm); tan cloth, with titles stamped in black on spine and front cover; [10],11-311,[1]pp. Some wear to spine ends and extremities, gentle sunning to spine, with some mild discoloration to board edges, rear hinge starting, with a small chip to lower right edge of front endpaper; Very Good. Best-known book by Burke (1886-1945), a collection of 14 short stories set in the Limehouse borough of London's poverty-stricken East End, featuring the the Chinese character Quong Lee as narrator. "The Chink and the Child," the first story in the collection, was the basis for D.W. Griffith's screenplay for Broken Blossoms (1919), and used "Gina of Chinatown" and "Song of the Lamp" as source material for his 1921 film Dream Street.
