About This Item

[Chicago, 1913]. [2], 7-24 pages, plus frontispiece portrait of the author. Original printed blue wraps. [17.4 cm.] A little fading to wraps; soiling to rear wrap. Slightest hint of marginal foxing to title; tiny bit of staining to gutters of leaves near center from staple used in binding. Still very good. FIRST EDITION. Scarce. The author discusses Lincoln's gradualism regarding the abolition of slavery and offers it as a lesson to those looking to fulfill the promise of '76 in the present day. He argues against legislative action as a quick solution to issues such as Filipino independence, women's suffrage, the abolition of Jim Crow, and the ending of "industrial slavery." Herman Page (1866-1942), an Episcopalian Minster, later became the bishop of the dioceses of Spokane, Idaho, Michigan, and Northern Michigan. Monaghan 2079.
