In: L'art du livre à l'Imprimerie nationale. Antoine Vitray (ca 1600-1674) became the king's printer for oriental languages in 1622, and in 1635 he succeeded Antoine Estienne as printer to the clergy. He is renowned as the printer of the great Paris polyglot by Guy-Michel Le Jay, published 1645 in ten volumes. The oriental types used were partly from the collection of oriental types formed by Savary de Brèves, French ambassador to Constantinople and Rome. In 1632 after de Brèves death Louis XIII ordered Vitray to buy them and to add Armenian and Ethiopian. Vitray employed Jacques de Sanlecque to cut the punches and strike the matrices for the Armenian type ("Caractères bolorgir corps 16". Kévorkian p. 168). After Vitray's death in 1674 the types after being used in the famous Paris polyglot were finally handed over to the Imprimerie Royale. A few spots, else a fine copy of a very scarce type specimen with an important and distinguished provenance closely associated with the history of typography in Germany.

Description:
Strasbourg : D'Emil Simon Fils , 1834. This is a very good hardcover copy in the original binding of brown marbled paper boards with an all-over green design. There is a large printed paper label with the title inset in an elaborately lithographed Gothic style frame. Tan paper covered spine of dark green cloth. The edges of the covers have a little wear. Inside there is an elaborately detailed title-page followed by 32 of 40 numbered plates. No evidence of plates being removed, as binding still very tight, but normally with 40 plates. All plates are black & white lithographs showing an amazing variety of typefaces and alphabets. Many are composed out of very imaginatively worked animals, plants, people or inventions forming the letters. A classic of this genre, here an incomplete copy with various faults, such as browning, tiny foxing, and 2 instances of later careful coloring of initials on different plates. Quite rare in the original binding. Large oblong folio, 11" high X 13 1/2"…

U.S.A.: ITC, 1975. First Edition. Published to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the American typewriter, with designers Joel Kaden and Tony Stan reinvigorating the font by dispensing with its rigid spacing. "On every standard typewriter, there's a metal bar with a row of teeth spaced exactly one-tenth of an inch apart. In 1874 this famous bar lifted the typewriter from the inventor's bench and placed it in the office where it changed our reading habits, modified our concepts of legibility, and eventually opened the world of business to women." Description:
London: Unit Editions, 2021. 1st ed. Paperback. New/no dj as issued. A long overdue book examining the extraordinary life and work of artist/designer Ed Fella. Ed Fella is revered by many of the leading names in contemporary design. Now, at long last, there is a book that charts Ed's journey from the commercial design studios of 1950s Detroit to his current position as a widely celebrated artist/designer. Ed Fella: A Life in Images makes extensive use of his vast treasure store of visual delight: it showcases flyers, posters, original sketches, drawings, Polaroids and collages, as well as items from Ed's collection of vernacular design. The book makes unrestricted use of Ed's vast archive. David Cabianca, the book's co-author and its instigator, has surveyed the archive in depth. He writes: "Ed Fella's archive is legion. It branches into numerous streams while sustaining a robust trail of examples along the way. Fella's archive exhausts the possibilities one might find in graphic design. Ed Fella…

For half a century his pioneering work in the field of advertising design and typography has exerted a profound influence on the design profession; he almost single-handedly transformed "commercial art" from a practice that catered to the lowest common denominator of taste to one that could assert its place among the fine arts. Among the numerous clients for whom he has been a consultant and/or designer are the American Broadcasting Company, IBM Corporation, and Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
