About This Item

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons. Very Good+. 1929. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. B&W Photographs; Folding Map; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 281 pages; [SIGNED] 1929 G. P. Putnam's Sons. HC 1st edition, 1st printing. Snugly bound and very neat in original thatched red cloth with rules in blind and titles brightly in gilt to cover and spine. Inscribed and signed by both Martin and Osa Johnson on the front pictorial flyleaf, dated March 29, 1929 in New York City. Trace toning to cloth at spine; mild shelf tap to boards at bottom front corners. Superficial crimping to cloth at spine ends. The Johnson's were a cultural phenomena of the 20's and 30's, reaching near celebrity status primarily by way of the very popular films they produced of their expeditions and travel through Africa, South America and the Pacific. Between the the couple they authored only a few books, preferring to document their experiences with moving pictures. The book is inscribed to Dr William Wolf, a board member of the Lancaster Travel Club, and presumably in charge of securing the couple as a featured presentation for the Club's annual roster of explorers and adventurers. While there a number of contemporary newspaper articles and ads that feature the Club's ringing endorsements for local showings of the Johnson's films. It appears they did not make an appearance for an in person event. A really very handsome and well preserved copy. Illustrated by about 60 or so b&w photographs sepia toned by Martin Johnson. The photos are distinguished by their composition and clarity, as would be expected of a film maker. VG++ or a little better; Signed by Author & Illustrator .
