New York: Random House, 1966. Hardcover. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket.. Thin 8vo, cloth backed boards. Later printing of the 1966 play by James Goldman depicting the personal and political conflicts of Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, their children and their guests during Christmas 1183. It premiered on Broadway at the Ambassador Theatre on March 3, 1966, starring Robert Preston and Rosemary Harris, who won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Eleanor. The play has been produced numerous times, including Broadway and West End revivals. Also the basis for the 1968 film that wasÊ Nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Peter O'Toole, and winning three, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress for Katharine Hepburn.
Synopsis
JAMES GOLDMAN ’s screenplays include Nicholas and Alexandra, Robin and Marian, and They Might Be Giants . He wrote the book to the musical A Family Affair (with John Kander), as well as the librettos of Follies and Evening Primrose, both with scores by Stephen Sondheim. He died in 1998.
