About This Item
Charleston, S.C.: Walker, Evans. Fair with no dust jacket. 1860. First Edition. Hardcover. 402 pages (should be 407), no title. Handsomely library bound in black buckram with bright gilt to spine, covers are clean and nice. Interior end papers have signature of James H. Rodolph who seems to have been on the board of directors of a cemetery in Charleston in the 1920s. End papers and blanks renewed. Title is missing. First text page of the book is the opening of the List, starting with Abrahams, A.H. who owned $3,000 worth of real estate and paid $45 in taxes. This page is very foxed, corners repaired, hole in page not affecting text repaired with tape, page remounted. Next few pages are very foxed with some staining, small hole. Foxing and staining taper off a bit until page 25 when there is moderate foxing throughout with occasional heavy foxing. The Tax on Propery paid by Free Persons of Color starts at page 383 (with its separate title page). Page 387 is remounted, 389 has repair at bottom gutter, 391-395 have repairs and damage at bottom gutter with some text affected although the intent and spelling is clear. 397-399 have sections missing at the bottom gutter (about 3 inches) with some repair but text definitely gone. 401/402 have a large piece gone -- the last entry is for Betsey Walker who owned real estate and slaves (even tho she herself was a Free Person of Color), but we can't see the dollar value of her holdings. Rodolph's signature again on the last end paper. Binding is sturdy. Paper is aged and damaged in spots as described but except for the last few pages still legible and strong. Extremely scarce: WorldCat shows 9 copies worldwide and it has not yet made it to Googlebooks or to one of the reprint houses. With faults, but still a very scarce and fascinating piece of history.; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall .
