Black and white polka dot hardcover boards with a full color illustration of Little Black Sambo with a green umbrella front and rear. Boards show edge wear with some creasing and rubbing. Light soil. Corners and spine ends lightly frayed. Half inch tear to rear spine. Binding is still nice and tight. Color illustrated endpapers are in very nice shape, showing minor soil. Text pages are clean.Beautiful black and white as well as full color illustrations by Nina R. Jordan. Always carefully wrapped and shipped in cardboard boxes to protect your purchase.
Synopsis
The Story of Little Black Sambo, a children's book by Helen Bannerman, a Scot who lived for 30 years in Madras in southern India, was first published in London in 1899. (An American edition of the book was illustrated by Florence White Williams. ) In the tale, an Indian boy named Sambo prevails over a group of hungry tigers. The little boy has to give his colourful new clothes, shoes, and umbrella to four tigers so they will not eat him.

When I was a young I thought this was a great book. I never considered this book racist. But back then I didn't know what racism was. Sambo could have pink with yellow polka dots I would never have known the difference. Only when the grown ups made it racist did this ever enter my mind.
