About This Item

Boston: Roberts Brothers,, 1871. First US edition, first printing, of the second book in the trilogy begun with Little Women (1868-9) and completed by Jo's Boys, and How They Turned Out (1886). Published on 1 June 1871, the Boston edition of Little Men was preceded by the London edition, published on 15 May. This copy has the first issue points: signature "1" on the first page of text and the four pages of adverts at the front. Blanck notes this edition occurs both with and without the signature mark and that no sequence is established, but the reprint of 1892 does not have the mark present, implying that this may be the primary state. Octavo. Original green sand-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt, brown coated endpapers. Housed in a custom brown quarter morocco slipcase and chemise. Frontispiece, with tissue guard, and 3 plates. A little rubbed and bumped, small loss to one corner of tissue, contents slightly toned but clean. A very good copy. BAL 167.

Synopsis

Little Men, or Life at Plumfield with Jo's Boys is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott, first published in 1871. The novel reprises characters from Little Women and is considered by some the second book of an unofficial Little Women trilogy, which is completed with Alcott's 1886 novel Jo's Boys, and How They Turned Out: A Sequel to "Little Men". Little Men tells the story of Jo Bhaer and the children at Plumfield Estate School.
