About This Item
New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., 1906. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 454 pages. Hardcover in green cloth with elaborate cover designs embossed in gilt. The binding is a little rubbed but is quite attractive. Top edge gilt. Prior owner's name on the front flyleaf is dated 1906. Text is a bit toned. There are several photographs from the stage presentation. This work was first published in 1891 and with the first stage adaptation in 1897. It was one of the more popular stories of its time and was based on Barrie's home village in Scotland. In the story, the a young minister faces off with troubles in the town when the local factory workers (weavers) rise up after having their wages cut. The military is called in, and a young gypsy woman stands up against the military. The minister tries to protect her, and they fall in love. As it turns out, the gypsy woman is high-born and is unwillingly set to be married to the old Lord of the town. An especially poignant story since the town was based on Barrie's home town, and was also the son of a weaver.
