About This Item

London: John Lehmann, 1950. First printing. Very good plus in near fine jacket.. First edition of Bowles's first short story collection, published without "The Delicate Prey" and "Pages from Cold Point" (both restored in the US edition) to save the fragile sensibilities of English printers and censors. "Practically all the tales are a variety of detective story," the author maintained in a letter to his American publisher. "Not the usual variety, I admit, but still, detective stories in which the reader is the detective, and the mystery is the motivation for the character's behavior." For Tennessee Williams, Bowles's short fiction was "the exploration of a cavern of individual sensibilities, and fortunately the cavern is a deep one containing a great deal that is worth exploring." 7.75'' x 5''. Original olive green cloth. In original unclipped (9s. 6d.) pictorial dust jacket by Keith Vaughan. 222 pages. Light bumping to boards; minor soil and remainder mark to lower edge of text block. Trace edgewear to jacket; spine lightly toned. Overall, sharp and bright.
