About This Item

London: John Lehmann, 1950. First Edition. A sharp copy of Bowles's first collection of short fiction, gathering a dozen short stories, several of which first appeared in the pages of Harper's Bazaar, Horizon, Life and Letters, Mademoiselle, Partisan Review, Penguin New Writing, and View. His stories "The Delicate Prey" and "Pages From Cold Point" were not included in this collection, since his publisher was convinced, "on the advice of Cyril Connolly and Somerset Maugham, that if they were included in the collection distribution and/or censorship difficulties might ensue" (Miller A3). First Impression, one of 3,500 copies. Octavo (20.25cm); green cloth, blocked and titled in dark green and gilt on spine; dustjacket; [10],11-222,[2]pp. Signed by the author on the title page. Subtle offsetting to endpapers, a hint of foxing to upper edge of textblock, else very Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced 9s. 6d. net), with a few pinpoint rubbed spots and a single tiny tear; very Near Fine.
