Two volumes of leather-bound three-volume set; Vol. I (408 p.) is complete but front board is detached and t.p. is smudged and stained, with name of former owner wrotten on upper margin--lower margin torn away, as is lower margin of "The Original Advertisement to the First Edition, 1779-1780." The rest of the volume is in much better condition, though some pages dog-eared and many are foxed. Paper is of fine quality and quite strong.T.O.C. comprises : Cowley, Denham, Milton, Butler, Rochester, Roscommon, Otway, Waller, Pomfret, Dorset, Stepney, J. Philips, Walsh and Dryden. Volume II is missing. Volume II (348 p.) begins with p. 17 and both the front and back boards are missing--a large label showing it to be part of an inheritance hides most of the text of p. pp. 17-39 are dog-eared at lower corner. Paper strong, though foxed. Articles include: Swift, Broome, Pope, Thomson, Watts, A. Philips, West, Collins, Dyer, Shenstone, Young, Mallet, Gray, Akenside and Lyttelton. Red leather patches on spines of both with "Johnson's Lives" in gilt lettering..
