About This Item

Paris: La Société française de reproductions des manuscrits à peintures, 1923 4to (28 cm), front., 35 pp. Printed wrappers (wrappers slightly rubbed). "The Hours of Étienne Chevalier" is an illuminated book of hours commissioned by Étienne Chevalier (1410-1474), treasurer to King Charles VII of France, from the miniature painter and illuminator Jean Fouquet. While 48 leaves with 47 miniatures were originally created, they are now dispersed across seven collections in Europe and the USA, with 40 illuminations held at the Musée Condé in Château de Chantilly, France. In 1922, French art historian Comte Paul Durrieu discovered one of these miniatures, depicting St. Michael fighting the Dragon, in the collections of Upton House, Warwickshire. In his study, he thoroughly analyzes this discovery and its significance within the context of art history.
