About This Item

New York: Viking, 1989. First edition. Hardcover. Remainder mark on bottom edge. Else fine copy/fine. Small 4to. Cloth-backed boards. Pp. xxvi, 530. Illustrated: some in color. Glossary. Notes. Maps. Index. Afterword by Geoffrey Hartman. Very well illustrated and documented history of the Lodz Ghetto which was created in 1940 when the Nazis forcibly relocated 200,000 Jews into its confines. It soon became a huge work camp for the German war effort, but eventually almost all of these people were starved or murdered. A deeply affecting story.
