About This Item

William Kimber, London, 1951. Reprint. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Illustrated. introduction by Peter Quennell, foreword by author, list of illustrations. The text is illustrated with 13 contemporary black-and-white illustrations (including frontispiece). Cream-coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured outline of a gentleman to the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Dark pink coloured tint to the top textblock edge. Illustrated dustwrapper with black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. This book was first published in 1862, and was the fourth instalment of the author's survey of conditions of the London proletariat. In this volume he (Mayhew and his collaborators) "... were concerned with the lawless, with outcasts, or with the enemies of society, who supported themselves by preying upon the vice or credulity of their more prosperous neighbours. The result was a remarkably vivid picture of an aspect of Victorian life that few other Victorian writers have ever dared to glance at: the teeming underworld of 19th-century London, whose headquarters – the night-houses, divans and oyster-bars which blazed with light till dawn – were established a few yards from what is today Piccadilly Circus. The book is a mine of odd and fascinating information. It also throws some valuable sidelights on the feelings of guilt and state of moral tension that underlay the apparent sanctimoniousness of so much Victorian art and literature." -- from the front and rear fold over panel blurbs. second-hand copy, no damage to the dust jacket, no damage to the book, no annotations. second impression of the First Edition.
