About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf/ Borzoi Books, 1947. Hardback. Very Good. FIRST US EDITION. 8vo. Original chestnut cloth, spine lettered in gilt, decorative blind-stamped "C H" to upper board. Top edge brown, leading edge untrimmed. Spine sunned, gilt dulled, extremities bruised, edges toned. Faint bands of offsetting and trace of tape marks to endpapers (mirroring those on dust jacket flaps). Else, clean and tight. In Philip Grushkin's original dust jacket: front flap clipped (but stating price at head: "A Forum Book $1.00"), shabby, toned, creased and worn, white splodge to front panel, numerous closed tears and losses with amateur taping to reverse, largest loss to head of spine. A robust copy of Himes' second novel. Very good/ fair Following his 1945 protest novel, If He Hollers Let Him Go, Lonely Crusade analyses racism and race relations through the lens of romantic relationships between Lee Gordon, a Black union organiser, his wife, and lover. Set in Electra, a Linotype face designed by W. A, Dwiggins. Binding design by Robert Galvin.
