Travis McGee is one of suspense fiction's most popular and idiosyncratic private investigators. The Florida beach-bum savant, home based aboard his houseboat the Busted Flush, enters his 21st adventure when hired to investigate the disappearance of a lavishly appointed custom-built yacht and finds more than he bargained for.The brutal murder of a Peruvian debutante and the sloppy 'accidental death' of a Florida real estate tycoon are pieces of the puzzle Travis McGee must fit together to save his own life. Because it's clear someone is intent on adding his name to the list of casualties. The increasingly hazardous business of keeping alive drops Travis into a Mafia drug-smuggling war and takes him to Miami and to an appointment at a Mayan ruin in the Yucatan. It also gives him pause for thought about his loner life, thoughts given a new direction by the appearance of a young woman who not only rekindles memories of a distant past happiness, but also opens up an entirely new chapter in the life and adventures of Travis McGee. Synopsis

The Lonely Silver Rain (1985) is the 21st and final novel in the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald. The work was published a year prior to the author's death, and was not intentionally the end of the series. It is also notable for the introduction of McGee's daughter Jean, who he unwittingly (but not unwillingly) sired with the now-deceased love interest Puss Killian from the ninth book in the series: Pale Gray for Guilt.
