About This Item

New York: Harmony Books, 1985. Near fine in near fine jacket.. Association inscribed first US edition of the fourth Hitchhiker's book, presented by Adams at the 1992 Harbourfront International Festival of Authors to festival founding director and Canadian literary impresario Greg Gatenby. A departure in tone from the previous books in the series, SO LONG is a romance so sentimental it brings back from the dead the once-exploded planet Earth. Earth, where "lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable," has many points against it both in literature and in life, but is still a nice place to go on dates.

This copy, inscribed by Adams in 1992 during his promotional tour for MOSTLY HARMLESS, was one of the many signed and inscribed books amassed by Gatenby during his two-decade tenure as festival director, representing "the growth of a literary culture in the city of Toronto over many years" (Caldwell). 7'' x 4.75''. Original black cloth stamped in metallic green. Purple endpapers. In original unclipped ($12.95) pictorial dust jacket by Peter Cross. 204 pages. Inscribed by Adams on title page "To Greg" [Gatenby]. Gatenby's ownership signature on front free endpaper. Boards a trifle dusty, corner crease to page 201. Light edgewear and one tiny stain to jacket.

Synopsis

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish is the fourth book of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series written by Douglas Adams. Its title is the message left by the dolphins when they departed Planet Earth just before it was demolished to make way for a hyperspatial express route, as described in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
