About This Item

Tucson: Privately Printed, 1987. First edition. Printed by Richard J. Hoffman. Octavo, gilt-stamped cloth, 85, [1] pp. Photos. Fine. From Prologue: In the family archives that came to me after my mother’s death in 1957, a few months before her 87th birthday, were two manuscripts in her hand, one a faint penciled account of her early years, the other, in more readable purple ink, a longer narrative of her residence in Europe, 1931 - 34. The latter was written after her return to California, to be entered in a magazine contest with the intention of recouping her lost income. Alas, I failed to edit and type it for submission when efforts to find work after graduation from library school and then the job at UCLA took most of my time and energy. Only after her death did I turn to the European manuscript and have the book printed in Holland as The Quiet Side of Europe, a better memorial than a gravestone. Thirty years passed before I came to the other manuscript. Here now is a transcription as she wrote it, with my commentary to clarify and amplify her terse narrative. It was written from memory in Dijon where she had joined me in the final stages of my studies. Much of my time was spent that summer of 1932 on endless revisions of my thesis on Robinson Jeffers and then in seeing it through the press... It was to occupy my mother that I suggested she set down memories of her childhood and on through school and college to marriage and eventual residence in California. I also wanted to know more about my ancestors. She set to work in earnest, and here now fifty-five years later is her narrative. She wrote it effortlessly, always a crack speller, and in the legible hand she never lost...
