Booklet accompanied an exhibition at the Bancroft Library from March 17 through September 4, 2000. Looking Backward: 2000-1887, a utopian novel written at the end of the 19th century by Edward Bellamy depicts a society with a more ideal communal order and organization. The utopian novel provides a springboard to ideas formulated in this exhibition which looks at the journey taken by the state of California during the last 150 years.
