The two ships led by Admiral d'Entrecasteaux failed to find La Perouse but made many important observations in Tasmania, Western Australia, Papua New Guinea. D'Entrecasteaux's activities led to a series of expeditions by the French which stirred the British to make countermoves in colonial strategy.
