About This Item

Printed by Order of the Trustees. (Sydney: Charles Potter, Government Printer: 1889) ‘5e 26-88 (A)’. First Edition. Boards with later replacement cloth backstrip (that is, hard covers) pp. x, 132 plus plates. Folding maps front and rear, being ‘Sketch showing position of Lord Howe Island with reference to the Coast of New South Wales’ (frontispiece) and ‘Geological sketch-map of Lord Howe Island, etc., by the late H.T. Wilkinson, J.P., Visiting Magistrate’ (Plate X, at rear). The other eight plates, with their leaves of explanatory text opposite, follow the text, most relating to natural history but two of them being Charts. The Preface points out that ‘From unavoidable causes the descriptive account of the Mollusca is not yet ready for publication, although the plates are issued in advance. The former will appear subsequently as a second part of this Memoir’. First Edition. Some darkening of the boards and especially near the spine where an owner long since must have sought to reinforce the original backstrip with tape of some sort which has left a dark strip front and rear; two neat erasures on front endpapers; two clean tears to one map, and a little wear along a fold of another map; otherwise a very good copy and internally near fine.
