About This Item

This is an amazing, handmade, one-of-a-kind calligraphic manuscript containing handwriting examples of "The Lord's Prayer" written in 112 different languages. Circa 1860's - 1880's (the book is undated); there is no indication as to who had created the book, or where. Handsome leather binding with gilt decorations on the covers, spine, and board edges; marbled end papers; gilt page edges on all sides. The handmade title page features a beautiful decorative color border around the handwritten title, which reads: "The Prayer of our Lord Written in Various Languages and Characters in Propaganda." Interspersed within the book are full-page illustrations of various landmarks and regions from around the globe (the illustrations were presumably taken from another book). Each prayer is beautifully and neatly scripted in black ink, and the pages are hand-numbered in ink at the upper-outer corners - - much care was taken in creating this wonderful book.

The 112 languages are as follows (Note: the spelling of some languages differ today - I have typed them as they appear in the book):
1. Hebrew 2. Kabbinico 3. Samaritan 4. Syrian 5. Litteral Chaldean 6. Vulgar Chaldean 7. Cufo-Ararbic 8. Cufic 9. Arabic 10. Sidonic 11. Glagoritic 12. Karmathic 13. Zend 14. Persian 15. Condition:
Clean covers with no stains; rubbing of the leather on the spine and along the spine edges; wear to the corners and to the top and bottom edges of the spine; bright gilt on the covers and spine. The text block has separated from the spine before the title page...as a result, a cluster of pages from the title page to page 39 have detached; the following pages through to the end of the book are attached. Bright gilt page edges on all sides. The pages are in excellent condition - clean with no issues found (with the exception of 2 small ink stains at the bottom of the "French" page and foxing to the front and rear blank end papers).
