About This Item
New York: New Amsterdam Book Company, 1900. First American edition. Hardcover. Ernest Pratter. pp. 407. Thick 8vo. Bound in olive cloth with stamped illustrations to front board & spine. With four full-page black-and-white illustrations by Ernest Pratter. The bevelled boards show wear at tips, and some rubbing to edges. Boards a bit bowed, and soiled, although blocked image on front board still quite good. Some foxing to foredges. Front free endpaper removed. Hinges tender, and binding a bit sprung. Front hinge slightly split. Contents lightly foxed. Overall, still a good copy. A scarce title to begin with, but this - the first American edition - is extraordinarily scarce. Similar in format to the first British edition, published 1899 by James Bowden, London. One of Henty's very few 'adult' novels. This presentation by Bowden and the New Amsterdam Book Company troubled Henty as it portrayed the book as a boy's title, when, in fact, it was meant for a different audience (see Newbolt 87.1).
