Her parents were Jonathan and Ruth Slocum. They had brought their family from the old home in Rhode Island a long way through the forest to their new home. Many of their neighbors also had moved here because of much good farming land. The year in which our story begins was 1778. The Revolutionary War was going on. The American colonists were trying to win their independence from the English government. The Indians were helping the English fight the Americans.
