Of the multiple editions, this is one of a thousand testimonial sets illustrated with Japanese Proof Plates: the frontispiece is hand-colored, 18 full-page photogravures (the tissues have printed text), with 34 monogravure plates ( some photographic), many by Alfred Russell (he was the Art Editor for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat). This volume is devoted to a record of the trans-Mississippi exploration and development, "probably the first consecutive narrative that has been published of territorial organization, state admissions, extension of settlements, and industrial inauguration whereby the West has become not only the granary of the world, but the sinew of America." - Introduction. This covers from the 1804 purchase of Louisiana, through Lewis & Clark, and missionary labors, to the end of the Indian Wars and the rise of Western commerce.

Joyce And Company has been in business as a professional rare bookseller and appraiser since 1975. Owner Thomas Joyce was the regular book appraiser on Home & Garden TV\'s \"The Appraisal Fair\\\" program, on international broadcasts. Thomas Joyce was the co-discoverer of George Washington's personal copy of William Leybourn's 1679 edition of THE COMPLEAT SURVEYOR, from which young Washington learned some of his surveying skills at age 16. The book had vanished for nearly a century until its re-discovery in 2017. It is now back at Mt. Vernon.
