About This Item
Livingston (MT): Hutchinson & Co., 1895. The eighth in Zola's Rougon-Macquart series, which first appeared as a novel in 1878. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of the First English Edition, noted by the publisher as the "sole authorized version." Translated, and with a Preface by Ernest Alfred Vizetelly. Maroon cloth binding with titling and decorations in gilt on the spine and front cover. Clean text; xi, 386 pages, with a two-page advert in the rear. Containing 94 wood engravings by E. Thevenot. There is no publication date, but bibliographers agree on 1895. Bumped, rubbing to the margins, endpapers tanned. The spine has faded but the gilt remains presentable. The signatures have cracked at page 144-145, hence the "minus" condition, but the book remains sound otherwise.. First UK Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. Illus. by E. Thevenot. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
