New Haven: Yale University Press, 1944. Second printing. Hardcover. fine/very good. A group of four pieces by poet William Meredith, all inscribed to former Princeton University president Robert Goheen and his wife. 1) "Love Letter From an Impossible Land" : hardcover, second impression, 1944: New Haven (Yale). THE AUTHOR'S FIRST VOLUME OF POETRY. Fine in very good dust jacket. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Peg & Bob with all good wishes from Bill/ Princeton 23.vi.46". 2) Quarto sized single typed sheet consisting of three short verse pieces: "Carrier", "Battlewagon", and "Transport". Incsribed at the foot of the sheet, "For Peggy & Bob, with all good wishes, Bill/ 131 Pyne Hall, Princeton, NJ/ Dec. 1946" 3) single 8vo. sized sheet with "Christmas Greetings/ 1957/ William Meredith" and "146 Kings Highway/ Westport, Conn" on the front. The sheet unfolds and has his poem "Notre Dame de Chartres" (from "The Open Sea and Other Poems" imprinted. Inscribed at the conclusion, "Merry Christman & best wishes to Peg & Bob, as ever/ Bill". 4) "2 pages from a Colorado River Journal" with date of December, 1967, single sheet folded quarto, yellow paper. Facsimile reproduction of two pages from the author's journal including the poem "In The Canyon". Inscribed on the front sheet "For Peggy & Bob and all theirs with season's wishes and friendship, as always/ Bill". The three laid in pieces described above are all fine. William Meredith (1919-2007) was born in New York City and a 1940 Princeton graduate; at Princeton, he became lifelong friends with the recipient of these pieces, Bob Goheen, who himself would go on to become President of the University in 1972 and later U.S. Ambassador to India. Meredith worked for the New York Times prior to enlisting as a flier in World War II (he woul;d re-enlist during the Korean Conflict). He taught at Princeton beginning in 1955, was the Poet Laureate Consultant for Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1978 to 1980 and won the Pulitzer Prize fro Poetry in 1988.
