About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1969. Very Good/Very Good. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1969. First Edition, stated First Printing. Octavo. 188 pp. Illustrated dust jacket. Blue boards stamped in red. Autograph letter signed from The Graduate author Charles Webb to literary agent Llewellyn Howland mounted to front endpapers. Additional typed letter signed from Webb to Howland, and a carbon copy of Howland's response laid in. Book itself is unsigned.

Webb's first letter is dated 1967 and concerns the manuscript of Love, Roger. Webb asks Howland for help with making the more character more engaging and notes other areas he will be re-writing. Howland's Little Brown eventually passed on the book, as noted in Webb's subsequent letter, dated 1981. Here Webb asks about a recommendation for a contact at Little Brown for his next novel and whether Howland can help his neighbor track down any Harold Bell Wright novels.

Howland's response touches on the vagaries of the publishing industry and praises Webb as "one of the most original and most able writers of your generation," and continues to tell him he should write short novels. Howland continues by citing Austin Tappan Wright's Islandia as the last good long novel published in the U.S.

Light edgewear and creasing to edges of unclipped dust jacket. Boards with mild shelfwear, binding is sound, and pages unmarked. Mild creasing to edges of letters. Very Good.
