Dresdae & Lipsiae: apud Fridericum Hekel, 1734.. FIRST EDITION 1734, Latin text, 8vo, approximately 170 x 95 mm, 6½ x 3¾ inches, small floral device on title page, 2 decorative woodcut headpieces, some small woodcut tailpieces, pages: [16], 301, [3] - index, bound in full modern panelled speckled calf, decorated in blind, gilt raised bands to spine, richly gilt in compartments, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. Title page faintly browned and with a tiny ink spot to blank lower corner, some light age-browning here and there. A very good tight clean copy. The author describes 100 rare books from the late 15th century onwards, some in French, some in Latin, Spanish, Dutch or Italian, 2 in English. Subjects include medals and engravings; love and beauty; religion and theology; law; medicine; printing; Boccaccio's Decameron; chess and Gioachino Greco with a list of writers on chess and other games; Le Romant de la Rose; a play by the Earl of Rochester; Mozarabic Rites; life of Michelangelo; writings of Dante. Pages 285-301 contain Beyer's notes on De charlataneria Eruditorum by Johann Burckhard Mencke, a well known satirical pamphlet on the foolishness of men of learning.
