New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to. Pp. [2], 3-216. Frontis. Black & white photograph of "Homage to New York," a self-constructing and self-destroying work of art by Jean Tinguely. Laden with black & white photography and illustrations. Notes. Index. Bound in stamped tin boards depicting in color a NYC street scene with MOMA as the centerpiece. Spine just a tad tarnished. Swedish art collector and museum director K. G. Pontus Hulten, (1924-2006), compiled this catalog for the MOMA exhibition, 1968-1969, for which he served as curator. Hulten described the show as a "collection of comments on technology by artists of the Western world," particularly in the modern age when "the mechanical machine - which can most easily be defined as an imitation of our muscles - is losing its dominating position among the tools of mankind; while electronic and chemical devices - which imitate the processes of the brain and the nervous system - are becoming increasingly important." A handsome copy.
