Green cloth, stamped in red and black; white endpapers printed with green all-over pattern; [ii], iv,125,[3]pp; 2pp publisher's ads at rear. Ownership and gift inscriptions from John H. Wheeler, a Classics professor at Bowdoin and UVA, and Louise F. Wheeler, dated 1883 and 1887. Straight, gently rubbed, f.f.e.p. torn at gutter, else sound: around Very Good.

Cable's fourth published work, a novella on the theme of miscegenation, set in the Creole community of his native New Orleans. BAL 2333. WRIGHT III, 870.
