Twelve tipped-in illustrations in color by Charles Robinson, with captioned tissue guards. (Lacking tissue guard at page 66 and marginal closed tears on the tissue guard at page 80) Many textual illustrations and pictorial endpapers, all by Robinson. Aside from the fault with two of the tissue guards and a bit of wear at the corners, this is a near fine copy of the First American Edition.

Dark green calico-texture cloth over boards, front cover and spine gilt-stamped with pictorial scene with seated woman under tree and floral designs; all edges gilt; dark brown end papers; tissue-guarded frontispiece; tan and black pictorial title page; binder's diamond shape ticket on rear pastedown at inner corner 'Bound by | Burn | & Co'. Bright, clean covers and spine (no edge wear); tightly bound; frontis tissue somewhat age darkened; frontispiece and title page slightly age darkened at edges; clean interior with slight age darkening at page edges. Marbled paper on boards. Previous owners armorial bookplate on front paste down endpaper. Some chipping to the spine ends otherwise a very good copy.

Contemporary half green polished calf with gilt- and blue-marbled paper over boards. Six spine compartments between raised bands; red leather labels in the second and third compartments with gilt-tooled title and author. Gilt-tooled decoration in remaining compartments. Top page edges gilt. Gilt- and blue-marbled endpapers. In Very Good Condition: as is usual with green calf, the spine is faded to brown; front board has been sensitively reattached by a conservator; older archival repair to gutter between half title and frontispiece; occasional minimal foxing along fore-edges; clean and tight.
