About This Item

October 9, 1929.. 1929.. Good. - A sepia-toned, octagonal, 4-1/2 inch high by 3-3/4 inch wide portrait has been clipped from a magazine and mounted on a piece of cream-colored card, 5-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide, and then on a slightly larger green card. Inscribed and signed in black ink on the cream mount below the portrait: "To my young friend / Walter E. Edge". The date has been penned at bottom left in another hand, probably the recipient's. There is a vertical ripple to the portrait from the mounting. There is some light foxing to the mounts. On the verso there are glue marks, areas of the surface rubbed away & a remnant of tape & black paper where the item has been removed from an album. Good. <p>Walter Evans Edge [1873-1956] was an American politician. A Republican, he was twice Governor of New Jersey, from 1917 to 1919 and from 1944 to 1947, serving during both world wars. He also served as U.S. Senator from New Jersey from 1919 to 1929. From 1929 to 1933 he was United States Ambassador to France.
