Alfred A. Knopf, 1945. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. 720 pages. Second printing of 1944 single-volume edition; first published 1927 in two volumes, from the German Der Zauberberg (1924). 8vo, black cloth with blind-stamped lettering and Borzoi logo barely visible. Much-used copy with heavy wear to the exterior: backstrip reglued but missing pieces, boards worn down to the cardboard (it's a wartime edition), some damp damage, hinges cracked, red topstain faded, edges and end-papers age-toned. Former owner's name written on ffep. Text block remains quite readable: all pages attached, binding supple, tears or chips to a few pages. The underscoring and/or marginalia observed on approximately 150 pages are mostly small marks in light pencil, but there are a couple of chapters with heavier annotation in ink. An interesting reading copy for some.
