About This Item

Boston: Arena Publishing Company, 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed first edition, cloth issue. (No additional printings indicated and sheets bulking to 9/16" rather than 7/8".) Inscribed to Minna Smith on front free endpaper, "My Friendly Critic - much valued. [signed] Hamlin Garland Roxbury. Nov. 3/91." Smith and her sister Gertrude were minor Boston authors close to the circle of authors (Mary Wilkins Freeman, Alice Brown, Bradford Torrey, Alice Guiney, et al.) that nurtured the young Garland and listened to and commented on his literary lectures. Additional gift inscription from Smith "To Manart Kippen ' from MCS." Some additional inscriptions and quotes written on rear endpaper, author uncertain.

260 pp. Original navy blue cloth with silver lettering. A Very Good copy with a scratch in the spine, light wear at tips. Poor quality paper toned, a little wear to front hinge.

The author's first published book of fiction, a significant advancement of the craft of American realist fiction, especially with regards to its plain-spoken Midwestern characters' realistic dialogue. Quite rare signed.
