Augusta, ME: Badger & Manley, 1879. 52 x 70 cm. The Secret of Making Good Butter (so much on the market today [1879] is poor..). Adulteration of Food--there ought to be a law, like in Europe. Cayenne pepper debased with red ochre, cinnabar, red lead and sulphuret of mercury; Cocoa, by red lead, sulphate or carbonate of line (to give weight); Coffee by pea flour, colored with Venetian red; Port wine adulterated by sulphuric acid (oil of vitriol); milk debased with water, flour, starch, gum, turmeric chalk, carbonate of soda. New narrow-guage railroad between Farmington and Phillips, ME-- 18 miles. Ads for Christmas gifts. Newspaper, some small tears in folds, good. . Catalogs: Farming/Newspapers.
