With illustrations, portraits, maps, with a facsimile of the Skelton Map of Southern California in a three-panel fold-out. Bibliography. Index. Top edge dyed light blue, fore-edge untrimmed. Bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering stamped on spine. With only slight evidence of wear to head of spine. According to Clark and Brunet, "Carleton saw wide-ranging service in the West, from Fort Gibson to Council Bluffs, from escort duty on the Santa Fe Trail, to Fort Tejon north of Los Angeles." The author's contribution underscores the role of the regular U.S. Army in the settlement of the West. CLARK and BRUNET, 132.
